Welcome to Dancing Moon Desert Retreat, an eco-friendly glamping and stargazing haven! Nestled within Terlingua Ranch, this 40 acre property and Lazy Moon, the remodeled Aristocrat trailer, enjoys dramatic vistas and a most pristine environment.
Thoughtfully crafted for those wishing to disconnect from a busy life, Lazy Moon encourages a quiet and immersive experience of the desert. Sunrises and sunsets and outdoor cooking under the milky way. Everything you need for a magical off-grid retreat!
Please be so kind as to read the entire description below, as most questions are answered there. Lazy Moon hosts 2 guests. Tents or campsites not permitted. No exceptions :)
Lazy Moon is a wonderful destination for travelers wishing to retreat within or those seeking an un-altered connection to nature. With the desire to reconnect to the land and create a symbiotic relationship, one of minimal human footprint, Dancing Moon Desert Retreat offers only the most essential of amenities. Thus, WIFI or cell service are not available at the property, nor is running water or electricity. We offer a selection of art books and poetry, artworks and board games, outdoor grilling areas and lounge chairs, and, most strikingly, the milky way herself visible to the naked eye. If you love breathtaking views of the desert, stunning sunrises and sunsets straight from your bed, and magical stargazing, then LazyMoon was meant for you! It is conveniently located 26 miles from the entrance of the National Park.
The little LazyMoon trailer is an original and antique Aristocrat travel trailer from the early 1970s. It was entirely remodeled and rebuilt as an off-grid minimal-impact desert retreat.
Inside Lazy Moon
The bed is a super comfortable full size memory foam mattress with 4 fluffy pillows, and the made-to-measure couch also transforms into a lazy day bed. All the pillows and cushions were quilted by Marguerite, a lovely woman who owns the quilt shop in town - a highly recommended stop during your travel. Soft linens are provided for the bed as well as pillows, extra throws and comforter, so that you can travel light and be cosy. There are solar and battery operated lights inside and out on the property.
The Property
All 40 acres of the property are for your private enjoyment.
Enjoy a lazy day out on the property, walking around the hills or under a stream of water in the incredible outdoor shower (works with a cowboy shower bucket which contains 5 gallons of water).
Because nothing beats grilling while looking at the Milky Way, Lazy Moon has a charcoal BBQ Pit for you to cook on. You can also enjoy grilling on the fire (unless a fire ban is on) or you can use the BBQ. You will have to bring your own charcoal and fire wood and whatever else you think you might need to enjoy your dinner.
Here's what Lazy Moon grilling area comes with: 1 charcoal BBQ pit, 1 outdoor prep table. A 5-gallon water jug filled with water is also provided for your convenience. Dinnerware not provided.
Minimal Impact
To preserve water which is so precious to us out here in the desert, we built a composting toilet which sits along a lovely desert walkway with grandiose yuccas and various cactii. (Toilet only to be used for number 2).
There is no running water on site. The Ranch HQ offers full bathrooms and showers for a small fee (10 miles away).
There is no power in the trailer or on the property so that means no AC, no fridge, no microwave, no coffee machine, no electrical outlets.

Important Information
Being Off Grid:
Please note, there is no shower facility on site, but if you drive up to the Ranch headquarters (about 10 miles) you have access to full bathrooms and to the pool during open season for a small fee payable to the Ranch lodge. The last 3 miles of that drive are on an unpaved road and the showers are usually open 24/7.
The properties are bordered by Ring Tail Road, a well-maintained dirt road from which you will be driving. During rainy season, we recommend driving a 4WD car, as when we get rain the terrain can get quite muddy and difficult to navigate in the entire Big Bend Area.
Before your arrival, please make sure to save the driving directions as cell service in the entire Big Bend area can be pretty bad and sometimes accessing emails doesn’t work!
Understanding the Desert:
The Big Bend is a Desert and temperatures in the Summer will go way over 100 degrees. Keep in mind they can also go pretty low at night. Inside the trailer will reflect outside temperatures. So bring extra covers if you're visiting in the winter and always bring extra water!
Hearing desert creatures at night is totally normal, that’s when they’re active the most because they too avoid the sun.
Lights at night will attract moths, and water will attract bees during the day.
During those extra toasty summer days, the water we leave out for you on the property could get really hot and turn out to be not too enjoyable. You can easily change the water and/or refill the jug at the lodge.
During rainy season, I recommend driving a 4WD car, as when we get rain the terrain can get quite muddy and difficult to navigate in the entire Big Bend Area.
Private Property:
Every property around you and within the ranch is privately owned. Please be respectful and stay within the boundaries of the trailer and its property. People here are quite serious about not trespassing and you could find yourself in trouble if you did. All the property owners here love and cherish this desert, especially for its privacy. So please be considerate of our neighbors and don’t wander off!
Property Rules:
There is no firearm discharging allowed on the property, and rocks on the fire pit or walkways are not to be moved under any circumstances .
We kindly ask that upon your leaving, you put everything back where you found it, and take the trash you've created with you.
Distances:
The Ranch HQ is about 16 miles away. There you will find the Bad Rabbit Cafe, free wifi, a Swimming Pool, Full Bathrooms and a Laundry Room. You can use the showers and pool for a small fee (check with the lodge).
The Terlingua Ghost Town and Study Butte are a short drive away heading South on 118 (about 20 miles), and the entrance of Big Bend National Park is about 30 miles.
